24-hour trading has gone mainstream

Robinhood, Webull, Public, Schwab, E*TRADE, tastytrade and Interactive Brokers all run overnight sessions for at least some US stocks and ETFs. Coverage varies widely: Interactive Brokers lists more than 10,000 securities overnight, while Schwab's thinkorswim session covers about 1,300. Overnight markets are thinner, so spreads are usually wider than during the day.

How your account is protected

Stock and options accounts at a member broker carry SIPC protection of up to $500,000, including $250,000 in cash, if the broker fails. It does not cover market losses. Most large brokers buy additional "excess SIPC" insurance on top. Futures accounts are not covered by SIPC. Futures brokers instead hold customer money in segregated accounts under CFTC rules, and some publish daily segregation statements. Crypto and event-contract accounts are generally outside SIPC as well.
